Why Logic
At Weston Christian Academy, the study of Logic is an essential part of classical Christian education, equipping students to think critically and reason rightly. Logic is “the art and science of reasoning well,” and reason means drawing proper conclusions from other information. The proper use of reason allows students not only to form rational statements, but also to understand and evaluate the statements of others.
Studying logic trains students to recognize flawed reasoning, a skill increasingly vital in a culture saturated with persuasive but misleading messages. Logical fallacies, flawed arguments rooted in poor reasoning, are common in today’s world. By studying these fallacies, students learn to recognize faulty logic, think critically, and discern what is true and right. Logic helps students clarify their beliefs and give a thoughtful, reasoned defense of their faith (1 Peter 3:15).
The skills developed through Logic extend into every academic discipline: testing hypotheses in science, analyzing language structure in Latin and English, solving problems in mathematics, interpreting meaning in literature, understanding cause and effect in history, and affirming the coherence of Scripture in Bible class. Logic provides students with a strong foundation for academic excellence and spiritual maturity.
