Student Support Services
At Weston Christian Academy, we are deeply committed to supporting all our students to the best of our ability. However, our families need to understand the legal differences between the services provided in public schools and those available in private school settings for students with disabilities.
When a child is voluntarily enrolled in a private school, they do not have an individual legal right to receive all of the special education and related services they might otherwise be entitled to in a public school. This limitation is defined in federal law under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA):
“No parentally-placed private school child with a disability has an individual right to receive some or all of the special education and related services that the child would receive if enrolled in a public school.” –34 CFR § 300.137(a)
While we are always willing to explore the accommodations and support we may be able to provide, these services are limited and not guaranteed under IDEA for privately enrolled students. Additionally, while a student with a public school Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) may qualify for the Family Empowerment Scholarship for Students with Unique Abilities (FES-UA), please note that private schools are not legally required to implement or follow the IEP. We encourage families to contact our director of Student Support Services with any questions or to discuss how we can best support your child’s educational needs within the scope of our available resources.
