Technology
Student learning and spiritual growth are at the heart of everything we do at Weston Christian Academy. Technology is viewed as a tool to improve the students’ learning experience. Technology is integrated into the academic subjects to increase productivity, improve logical thinking skills, develop collaboration skills, improve research skills, organize thoughts, improve problem-solving skills, and produce high-quality, aesthetically pleasing products. WCA is committed to using technology in developing academically strong God honoring students.
Weston Christian Academy’s desire is for students to become technologically literate, life-long learners. Students will skillfully use technology to access, analyze, and present information in the field of their calling. To help us accomplish these goals, Weston Christian provides teachers with tools such as Interactive Displays, Smart Boards, and document cameras. The teachers are trained in the use of each of these devices and use them in their daily lessons to enhance learning. Students and teachers also have access to Chromebooks and a recently upgraded computer lab. These electronic devices are closely monitored by our IT team to ensure that students are obtaining only the most positive aspects of these devices.
WCA offers many computer classes to help develop the students’ skills. Students from Kindergarten to 5th grade have a computer class every week. They are taught many aspects of how computers work, from the absolute basics to advanced topics that will equip them at a young age with necessary skills for their futures, including: computer basics, typing, research and reference, digital security, digital and cloud applications such as the Google Suite. Seventh grade students take Introduction to Computer Science, besides continuing with a big emphasis on keyboarding skills, students build on their understanding of the Google Suite to an advanced level. Students will also learn a foundational level of coding and how computers function on the software/hardware level, the symbiotic relationship of hardware and software, and how computers interact with each other.
Students also have the opportunity to dive deeper into the more advanced aspects of coding with our coding elective, open to all middle school students. In this course, we take a look at not just how to code, but how to build actual projects and practical applications varying from calculators to small portfolio websites with Python.
WCA offers a very special and God-honoring elective for our Middle School students. Students have an opportunity to serve on the school’s Tech Team for up to four semesters during their Middle school elective class. It also gives the students a rare opportunity to learn how to plan and run the technical aspects involved in producing WCA’s weekly chapel. This involves learning how to run the sound system, lighting, produce digital presentations, and create a program.
