Orchestra & Band

Beginning in 4th grade, Weston Christian Academy students join either the orchestra or band program, choosing to learn a string instrument (orchestra) or a wind/brass instrument (band). Instruction continues through 5th grade and includes music reading, theory, and foundational performance skills, forming the Elementary Orchestra and Elementary Band.

In 6th through 8th grades, students advance to the Middle School Orchestra or Concert Band, where they further develop their musical proficiency. From 4th through 8th grade, all students are encouraged to practice daily and are required to participate in two performances each school year. Optional private lessons are also available after school on campus.

Elementary String Orchestra

The Elementary Orchestra includes 4th and 5th grade string students who learn to play the violin or cello. This class focuses on developing individual and ensemble skills, building on foundational music instruction in playing technique, music reading, and performance.  Participation in either band or orchestra is mandatory for all 4th and 5th grade students.

Middle School String Orchestra

The Middle School String Orchestra, open to 6th through 8th grade students, requires at least one year of prior string instruction. This program introduces intermediate-level playing, music theory, and more advanced key signatures. Students work on challenging musical scores to prepare for high school orchestra. While participation is voluntary for 7th and 8th, students are encouraged to select Orchestra or Band as a Fine Arts Elective.

Elementary Band

The Elementary Band teaches 4th and 5th grade students to proficiently play instruments such as flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, or saxophone. This class builds upon early elementary music instruction, introducing playing fundamentals and technique, reading music, and performing musical pieces. Participation in either band or orchestra is mandatory for all 4th and 5th grade students.

Concert Band

The Concert Band, open to 6th through 8th grade students, requires at least one year of previous instruction on a wind or brass instrument. This program moves students into intermediate-level playing, music theory, and advanced key signatures. Students work on challenging musical pieces to prepare for high school band. Participation is voluntary for 7th and 8th, but students are encouraged to select Orchestra or Band as a Fine Arts Elective.
